You are required to choose ONE of the FIVE case studies outlined below and provide a detailed needs analysis of the sport. From this conclude the most appropriate strength and conditioning requirements for a training programme. Your essay should be no more than 1000 words (not including tables); this will count for 40% of your final grade:

 

 

1.       The athlete is a 27 year old female playing for Wasp’s premiership netball team as a centre

2.       The athlete is a 21 year old female football player for Chelsea

3.       The athlete is a, male, 400 m hurdler competing at the county championships

4.       The athlete is a, male, national 50 m freestyle swimmer

5.       The athlete is a, 25 year old male, county cricket fast bowler

 

Learning Outcomes the assessment is testing1.       Analyse and evaluate the strength and conditioning requirements for a training programme.
Type of assessment1000 word essay (not including tables); this will count for 40% of your final grade:

 

Formatting and submission guidelines 

The essay should consist of the following sections:

 

1.       Introduce the sport

2.       Detail the physiological, biomechanical and injury aspects of the sport

3.       Outline appropriate training modalities based on your needs analysis

 

References to appropriate literature and normative values should be used where possible.

 

General Guidelines:

 

The generic level 5 Guidelines will be used in addition:

 

The report should be written in the third person. The page margins should be standard (i.e. 2.54 cm top, bottom, left & right). A maximum of 1000 words are allowed for the report (not including tables, figures and the reference list). All pages should be: 1.5 line spacing; 12 size font; Times New Roman text.

 

MARKING PENALTIES WILL BE ENFORCED SHOULD STUDENTS FAIL TO ADHERE TO THE GUIDELINES

 

General Report Guidelines:

In addition to the generic marking scheme the marking criteria will also include:

The clarity and style with which the essay is written

•The ability to reference accurately with names and dates

•Your ability to answer the question posed rather than the one you would have liked to have been asked

•Ability to provide appropriate justification for your assessment and exercise choices – this is not stating the obvious but indicating your knowledge (e.g., defining terms)

Grade criteria (Level 5) – General criteria applicable to essays, reports and aspects of projects and dissertations

 

 Level 5
80+  As below plus:

●      Excellent work which contains relevant material and shows analysis, originality or creativity of approach and a clear, well-articulated understanding of the subject matter.

●      Wide research incorporating up-to-date, relevant original material. Accurate citation and use of references.

●      Excellent with few or no errors in organisation, structure, grammar, spelling, punctuation, use of diagrams and tables.

70–79  As below plus:

●      Very good work which is clearly written, well argued and covers the subject matter in a thorough, thoughtful and competent manner. Contains some originality of approach, insight or synthesis.

●      Good evidence of research and good use of source material. Good use and presentation of references

●      Very good presentation, organisation, grammar, spelling, punctuation, diagrams and tables.

60–69As below plus:

●         A very good, well-presented piece of work covering much of the subject matter and which is clearly and lucidly written. Good attempt to consider and evaluate the material presented.

●         Evidence of research in the topic area and satisfactory use of sources and references.

●         Good organisation, structure, use and flow of language, grammar, spelling, format, diagrams, tables etc.

50–59As below plus:

●         Work that demonstrates understanding of the topic area with some attempt to discuss material.

●         Evidence of research in the topic area extending beyond key texts.

●         Satisfactory presentation and / or use of references / bibliography according to convention.

●         A satisfactory attempt to follow directions regarding organisation, structure, use and flow of language, grammar, spelling, format, diagrams, tables etc.

40–49●         Adequate work that attempts to address the topic and demonstrates some understanding of the basic aspects of the subject matter

●         Topic is researched using mainly books and Internet. Attempts to use and / or present references / bibliography according to convention

●         A basic attempt to follow directions regarding organisation, structure, use and flow of language, grammar, spelling, format, diagrams, tables etc

30–39FAIL – Work in this range attempts to address the question / problem but is substantially incomplete and deficient. Serious problems with a number of aspects of language use are often found in work in this range and the work may be severely under / over-length and / or fails to grasp the nature of the topic matter. Content, analysis, expression, structure and use of sources will be very weak or missing.
0–29FAIL – No serious attempt to address the question or problem, and / or manifests a serious misunderstanding of the requirements of the assignment. Acutely deficient in all aspects.
