Overview/Rationale

This assignment requires you to use your skills as a fashion buyer to research, build and visually merchandise a suitable range for Urban Outfitters (UO).  The range will be for AW2022, you can choose to focus on either men’s or women’s.

Task

  • Illustrator Range and Range building skills

Design a range of original garment shapes (minimum of 8) for AW2022 for UO own brand Mens or Womens.

  • You will need to create your original garment shapes using Adobe Illustrator, presenting these filled with colour, texture, all over print and placement prints, where appropriate and complete with all necessary trims and fastenings.
  • Consider range building, think here about Product mix and the relevance of colourways for specific garments.
  • Include fabric type and composition, along with retail prices.

Note;

  • The actual number of garments in the range may be more than 8. You can include accessories but these will not be assessed.
  • The use of WGSN silhouettes is not allowed.
  • Consider elements of sustainability, if applicable, and justify in your research.

  • Range Justification Research

You will need to justify your range through relevant and credible sources by investigating inspiration, Trend predictions, at least 2 competitors (1 on the High Street) and Urban Outfitters.  Consider what is relevant to your range/garments.  Ensure you are considering fabric and price architecture.

  • Application of range to store environment (VM) and Range plan

VM

Consider how your range can be effectively displayed in and Urban Outfitters store.

  • You will need to use visual merchandising theory to design an instore display using Illustrator.
  • Use your illustrator garments, display them on a range of fixtures against a shop wall 5m wide x 3m height.
  • Use your critical judgement to add relevant elements to the store wall such as mannequins, posters, signage, props, lighting, wall colours and textures.

Range plan

  • Produce a Range plan in Excel showing your garment range. Including a minimum of; Style ref, Description, COO, Store distribution, Ranking by ROS, Selling price.

Hand in an A3 digital board showing your Illustrator instore environment and Excel Range plan saved as a PDF.  Include notations in bullet points to substantiate your decisions if required.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the assignment you will have met the following learning outcomes:

  1. Draw upon and discuss supporting evidence to demonstrate a knowledge of the global buying cycle and buying roles, including sourcing and supply and corporate social responsibility.
  2. Select methods for continual professional progression through reflective practice to self-motivate, self-organise and support verbal, visual and accurate report presentations.
  3. Create professional visual presentations for fashion promotion and instore layout through the effective use of CAD.
  4. Apply skills in critical problem solving to review learnt knowledge and propose new and improved models of practice related to a fashion retailer

Range Build Assignment 

Marking Criteria

Grading will be in accordance with the Fashion & Textiles mark descriptors (see attached sheets) and will be based on the following:

Illustrator Range and Range building skills 20%

(Demonstrating your critical judgement of Range Building, Product Mix, development in CAD, Price, Fabric Type, fit for purpose)

Comp Shop Research 30%

(Your ability to analyse 2 appropriate competitors and trend predictions to justify your range for product, price, fabrication, relevance to customer)

Application of range to store environment 20%

(Demonstrating your critical judgement in visual merchandising to suit UO customer)

Range plan 20%

(Your ability to express garments in a Range plan format, showing a minimum of; Style ref, Description, COO, Store distribution, Ranking by ROS, Selling price)

Professional Presentation 10%

(Presented in a professional way suitable to show at an interview, file size compressed and submitted as 1 PDF including Self-assessment sheet)

The work should be submitted digitally via Turnitin on BlackBoard by 12pm Midday Monday 7th February 2022

1x PDF of 3x A3 Boards and self-assessment sheet.

Size 100mb (this is the MAX size for Turnitin).  Compress your file sizes if required.

Late work

It is imperative that you stick to the given deadline.  If you are unable to meet the deadline, due to e.g. illness, you may apply for an extension to the hand in date however this must be done prior to the deadline. Note in particular that problems with information technology (loss of data, printer failure, etc.) will not be accepted as justification for an extension. It is essential you get into good and ‘safe’ habits with regard to computer work by ensuring you make regular back-ups of work.

The following penalties will be applied to late work.

  • Unauthorized late work submitted up to 14 calendar days after the published deadline will be subject to a cap of 40%; this will be noted in the tutor feedback on your work
  • Unauthorized late work submitted more than 14 days after the deadline will receive a mark of 0%; this will be noted in the tutor feedback on your work

Where hardcopy work is received on time but the work is received after the deadline date and time via Turnitin, then the whole submission will incur a ‘late submission penalty’ as follows

  • Unauthorized late work submitted via Turnitin up to midnight 1 calendar day after the published Turnitin deadline will be accepted without penalty;
  • Unauthorized late work submitted via Turnitin more than 1 calendar day after the published Turnitin deadline up to 14 calendar days after the published deadline will be subject to a cap of 40% applied to the whole submission; this will be noted in the tutor feedback on your work
  • Unauthorized late work submitted via Turnitin more than 14 days after the deadline will receive a mark of 0% applied to the whole submission; this will be noted in the tutor feedback on your work
