Homeostasis Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate understanding of general concepts of pathophysiology and the role of homeostasis in body function.
This assignment requires Level 1 Writing Guidelines.
Answer the following questions using the information in the online course and in your textbook. Please include references for any outside sources utilized.
- Distinguish between etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and prognosis. In your own occupation, which of these provides you with the most useful information and why? (6 pts)
- Explain the relationship between homeostasis and cellular function.(2 pts)
- Select a body system (you may describe a specific process of this system as an example) and describe how feedback works to maintain homeostasis of this system. Identify any positive and negative feedback loops within this system.(6 pts)
- Identify potential complications with the body system if these feedback loops do not function properly. (2 pts)
Evaluate your occupational role in diagnosis and/or treatment of disease. What is most important to you when dealing with patients in various stages or states of disease? (4 pts)

Relationship between homeostasis and cellular function
Homeostasis refers to the body’s ability to regulate its internal environment such that it can respond to changes in both inner and outer conditions. The brain, kidneys, pancreas, and the liver help maintain homeostasis. For example, kidneys regulate blood pH and blood water levels. They are also responsible for maintaining ion and salt levels in the blood. These organs are composed of structural and functional units called cells whose functions include such basic life processes as providing structural support to tissues, respiration, lipid (fat) and protein synthesis as well as protecting the body against injuries or diseases. This implies that cellular functions complement homeostasis as they ensure the body is stable in response to fluctuations in internal and external conditions…Read more
